Dashboard Warning Lights: When Can You Drive and When Should You Stop?

Car Dashboard

Few things cause more instant dread for a driver than a sudden amber or red symbol lighting up on the dashboard. It is easy to panic, but understanding what those warning colours actually mean can save you from a breakdown or an expensive engine bill.

As a rule of thumb, amber warning lights indicate that an issue needs your attention soon—meaning you can usually drive carefully straight to our workshop for a check. Red lights, however, mean danger or a serious mechanical failure. If a red light pops up, you should safely pull over and switch off the engine immediately.

Modern cars are packed with complex electronics and sensors. When a mystery fault appears, plugging in a generic code reader isn’t always enough. Our technicians use dealer-level diagnostic software to pinpoint electrical, sensor, and engine faults accurately in seconds, ensuring we fix the root cause rather than just guessing.

If a light has just appeared on your dash, check our interactive guide or book in via our Vehicle Diagnostics service page.
